Once the capital city of Northumberland, Newcastle is now the major city in what is the North East's commercial and industrial heartland of Tyne and Wear, a county comprised additionally of Gateshead, Sunderland and North and South Tyneside. The city has been one of strategic importance since Roman times and its rich cultural history is easily accessed throughout the city, from the Museum of Antiquities to the Mediaeval Castle Keep and Blackgate.
It is to more modern times however that the city owes its unparalleled reputation as one of the great party cities. Nightclubs, bars, cafes restaurants, and theatre and music venues abound and create the perfect environment for celebrations such as stag and hen parties. The commercial attractions are just as important, with the Metro Shopping Centre, in particular, drawing people from all over the country.
